Overview

The Maras and Moray Tour is a popular day trip from Cusco, Peru that takes you to two fascinating ancient sites in the Sacred Valley: the salt pans of Maras and the terraced agricultural laboratory of Moray.

Maras is a small village located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Cusco, known for its ancient salt pans that have been in use since pre-Incan times. The salt pans, which are fed by a natural spring, produce high-quality salt that is still used today. Visitors can take a guided tour of the salt pans and learn about the traditional methods of salt production.

Moray is an archaeological site located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Maras, known for its circular terraces that were once used as an agricultural laboratory by the Incas. The terraces are carved into a natural depression and are thought to have been used to study the effects of different microclimates on crops. Visitors can take a guided tour of the site and explore the terraces and the remains of Inca structures.

The Maras and Moray Tour typically lasts a full day and includes round-trip transportation from Cusco, a guided tour of the sites, and lunch. It is a great opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the region and see some of the most beautiful and interesting sights in the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary

Maras Moray Tour.

We will pick you up at 08:00 a.m. from your hotel. The tour begins with a visit to the textile center of Chinchero and then to the colonial town of Maras. From Maras, we continue on to the nearby Inca site of Moray, a magnificent series of terraced circles set in the ground that were once used by the Incas to experiment with crops. Our final destination is the salt mines that have been in use since pre-Inca times. Water from a subway stream is channeled through pools where it evaporates and leaves crystals of pure salt. With thousands of deep white pools stretching across the valley, the views are incredible. We will finish the tour at approximately 03:00 pm.
