Travel GuideAs an emblematic example of Inca hydraulic wisdom we highlight Tipon, a town located 23 km southeast of Cusco, at an altitude of 3,560 meters above sea level, located in the district of Oropesa, province of Quispicanchis, was a major shrine where water was worshiped with the care and veneration that the Incas treated this element. This complex has been distinguished by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as a marvel of Civil Engineering. The respect for the natural environment and the technology used to mobilize the waters of the springs are a model of hydraulic engineering at the service of man and nature.
It is the only Inca complex that is in perfect working order.
The renowned Peruvian historian Dr. Luis Antonio Pardo, believes that the current name of Tipon may derive from the Quechua word Tímpuj, which means “to be boiling” and alludes to the fact that the waters of the springs gush out as if the liquid were boiling. This name was assigned in modern times, since the original name was another.
Peru is famous for the archaeological sites of the Inca period. But there are also other ruins worth exploring here, from the times before the Inca Empire. As one of the good examples, it should be mentioned about the Pikillacta or Pikillaqta ruins of the Wari culture.
The name Pikillacta was given at the time of the conquest, its original name is unknown, although it is said that it could have been called Muyuna, Muyna or Mohína (meaning circular).
Pikillaqta, which means in Quechua “city of fleas” is a huge set of ruins. Many of them are still covered with grass, trees, but even that part that was cleaned makes a great impression. This pre-Inca city was probably occupied between 550 and 1100 A.D. and contains approximately 700 buildings. The city has a geometric design and is divided into blocks with straight streets.
Andahuaylillas is a typical district of the Andean Zone, it is located at an altitude of 3 093 meters above sea level at a distance of 40 km from the center of Cusco city, also in this direction you can find the archaeological complex of Raqchi of Inca construction.
The Chapel of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas is its main tourist attraction, considered the Sistine Chapel of America, preserves in its interior amazing and wonderful murals dating from the seventeenth century, in addition to paintings made by the great masters of Cusco of the time such as Luis de Riaño, Tadeo Escalante etc, which were part of the famous Cusco School.
The church of Andahuaylillas was possibly built between the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century, on a base of some Inca enclosure, because until today you can see carved stones at the base of the church, the church of Andahuaylillas is one of a simple structure, the material used in its construction is adobe and stone, the roof is of Andean characteristics with sticks as thresholds and tiles covering the entire church.
