But what makes the rainbow mountain have so many different colors? Well, first, don’t believe all the pictures you see on the internet. The super bright technicolor photos are often enhanced by Photoshop, but the real destination isn’t boring either. Mountain slopes look like painted yellows, greens, reds and purples, but they look a little more natural in person.
The reason these colors have formed is because of the ice that used to cover the area. When it began to melt, the water mixed with minerals in the ground, turning the soil many colors. The red areas are from oxide mixtures, the yellows are from iron sulfide, the purples are from oxidized goethite or limonite, and the greens are from chlorite.
